If you made a fitness New Years resolution but you’re in the 65% of people who quit it by the end of January, then these 5 easy ways to stay motivated from Personal Trainer Nikki Auckland might help you get back on track
1. Set up your gym sessions in your calendar as appointments
This way you are more inclined to treat it like a commitment. Just the same way you would the hairdresser or nail bar! Block out 60 minutes in your calendar and use this time to hit the gym, do a home workout, go for a run or take the dog for a brisk walk – no excuses!
2. Book a personal trainer to keep you accountable
It’s a good thing to check in with and train under the guidance of someone who knows how to get the best out of you in each session, that’s their job!
3. Find a buddy to workout with
Having someone to workout with and who will also be putting in the hard yards can often boost your enthusiasm and motivation. If one of you are having an off day then the other lifts you up and vice versa.
4. Put your goals on paper and add visual cues
Write down what you want to achieve and by what date you want this to happen. Use a large piece of paper, add a motivating picture of yourself from a time that you felt good about yourself. Use this picture and these words or goal visually, stick it to a wall or your bathroom mirror to remind you of what you are working towards. This is to be a positive reminder that you are working hard to become the very best version of yourself.
5. Print out a monthly calendar and and mark off the days that you go to the gym with a big ✔
It’s a very satisfying feeling seeing that you went to the gym 3 times last week and using this as motivation to get to make it 3 to 4 times the following week (you get my drift)! Push yourself to be consistent with visual reminders that you are doing a great job and your commitment is on track.
Set yourself a small goal and when you achieve this goal, reward yourself. Try something like “I will attend the gym 3 times a week for a month”, then when the month is done treat yourself to some new leggings or a lovely well deserved massage.
